According to search engine giant Google, “Steampunk” was the most searched for interior design style in the United States this year.
This is according to data from Google’s top trending searches, or searches that had a high spike in traffic over a sustained period this year as compared to 2022. That data was compiled this year as part of its Year in Search 2023 report.
The steampunk style has roots in the Victorian era, making it both old-fashioned and modern, according to Rustica, a source for designer doors and hardware.
“Its design is very mechanical, almost industrial, employing materials such as polished brass, iron, wood and leather,” wrote Rustica on its website. “It can be thought of as pseudo-Victorian because of its upcycled love of the old, the repaired, the reworked and the imperfect.”
The other four top design styles include “maximalist,” “modern,” “minimalist” and “California coastal.”
Other design styles that saw an increase in search traffic include “Brutalist,” “Boho chic,” “French country,” “Art Deco” and “beach.”
When it comes to architecture, the top searched style is “Modern,” followed by “Creole,” “Craftsman,” “Neolithic” and “Second Empire.”
Rounding out the top 10, the other most searched styles include “Mid-century,” “French Baroque,” “Italian Villa,” “Contemporary” and “Bauhaus.”
Google also published top search results from other, non-home furnishings categories like music, television, fashion, sports and gaming. Those listings can be found in its full Year in Search 2023 report.
